IT'S FORESTRY EDUCATION FRIDAY!🌲📣😁👏 Had the pilgrims landed in Astoria, turkey wouldn’t have been on the menu (and the trip would have taken much, much longer). Oregon is one of nine western states in the contiguous US that doesn’t have native turkeys. Efforts to introduce turkeys started in the early 1960s with the introduction of Merriam’s wild turkeys, which are native to New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. In 1975, Rio Grande wild turkeys (native to the central plains) were introduced and are now the most numerous and widespread in Oregon. We have the Aztec Indians of Mexico to thank for domestic turkeys. In the mid-16th century, Spanish explorers returned to Europe with some of the Aztecs’ domesticated turkeys where they became common farmyard animals. European domestic turkeys (originally from Mexico) eventually returned to North America for turkey farming.

📣IT'S FORESTRY EDUCATION FRIDAY! 🌲😁👏 Easily identified by their distinctive masks, ringed tail, and remarkable ability to get into spaces they don’t belong, raccoons (aka “trash pandas”), live pretty much anywhere they can find shelter, water, and something to eat. The word raccoon is derived from the Powhatan word "arahkunem," which means "animal that scratches with its hands," a nod to their dexterous front paws that can untie knots and unlock gates. Raccoons have the most sensitive sense of touch of any animal known, with 10 times more nerve endings in their paws than we humans have in our hands. Once only found in North America, raccoons are now dumpster diving around the world. Kept captive in German fur farms, raccoons escaped during WWII and have since spread across Europe. They found their way to Japan in 1977 when a popular cartoon about a raccoon named Rascal convinced families that trash pandas make good pets, a craze that lasted just long enough to introduce raccoons throughout most of the nation.

HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS - this post is for you!

“Wood is Good: Forest Sector Career Learning” is a free 45-minute to one-hour long interactive classroom presentation for high school students that provides a survey of forest jobs and careers, highlighting the breadth and diversity of employment in the forest sector – from sawmill worker, to driver, to logger, to forester, to admin, etc. The idea is for students to understand the need and availability of high-paying, high-demand jobs that are right in their local communities. The program intends to spark an interest and help connect students to these great jobs. 🌲👷‍🌲

This program is offered in a virtual learning format for all Oregon high schools. In-person programs are offered in Lane County, Douglas County, Benton County, and communities north of Lane County along the 1-5 corridor up to and including Salem, and coastal communities from Newport to Reedsport.

IT'S FORESTRY EDUCATION FRIDAY! 📣👏😁🌲Why Fall? Why do we have fall at all? It pretty much comes down to sunlight and water. Photosynthesis - how plants make their own food - requires sunlight, carbon dioxide, and liquid water. Less sunlight in winter means less photosynthesis. Less sunlight also means colder temperatures. Water expands when it freezes; should the water in leaf cells freeze, the cells would burst, destroying the leaf. So what’s a plant to do? Some plants have solved this dilemma by abandoning their leafy parts in the fall and growing new ones in the spring. Most conifers and some broadleaf trees have found ways to keep their leaves in winter, such as producing an antifreeze-like chemical to protect against freezing. But even though evergreen conifers keep their leaves, their growth slows down so much that they essentially “sleep” through the winter just like their leafless neighbors.

One pound of wood is about 50% carbon by dry weight (meaning the wood is no longer part of a living tree and the water has evaporated) so a two-pound chunk of 2x4 lumber contains one pound of carbon. Plants get carbon from the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, a gas. Through photosynthesis, plants use sunlight to change carbon dioxide and water into sugar, which is used by the plant for energy and to build the plant’s many parts. To make two pounds of wood, a tree needs just about 32 square feet of pure carbon dioxide. However, our atmosphere isn’t made of pure carbon dioxide; air is only 0.04% carbon dioxide. For a tree to produce 2 pounds of wood, it would need to use all of the carbon dioxide found in 80,000 square feet of the air around us. Now, think about how much air is needed for trees to make enough wood to build a house…wow.
