IT'S FORESTRY EDUCATION FRIDAY! Dismissed by some as a toy for those with too much time on their hands, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), also known as drones, are a must-have tool among natural resource managers. In forestry, drones are used to map out tree stands and harvests units, detect fires, evaluate damage from storms, diseases, pests, and wildfires, and locate trespassers and unlawful activities. All drones, whether they’re flown for work or for fun, are subject to federal regulation and must be registered with the FAA.

📣👏🌲😀IT'S FORESTRY EDUCATION FRIDAY! What looks like a compass but used like a telescope? A clinometer, of course! In forestry, clinometers are used to calculate tree height and ground slope. Clinometers have been around for a long time; initially just a simple plummet tool (a string with a weight at the end of it), by the end of the 1700s clinometers included bubble levels, sights, and telescopes. Today, hand-held lasers are foresters’ go-to tool for measuring tree height, but when visibility is low, a clinometer can still get the job done.

It is a pleasure to work with @4jschools CTE program in Forestry and Natural Resources. Their program brings in many partners (including FTF!) to create a comprehensive learning experience for students that ignites curiosity and sparks interest in the natural resources career fields. Here are a few comments from students who participated in the program, and who we worked with at Bauman Tree Farm in our partner capacity. We are excited about our future forest stewards!
🌲"I enjoyed visiting the tree farms, it was neat to see where lumber is produced"

📣🌲🙌IT'S FORESTRY EDUCATION FRIDAY! Salmon don’t have legs, so how can they run? Most salmon are anadromous, which means they are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean to mature, and then return to freshwater to spawn. Returning salmon arrive in groups called runs, which are typically associated with a season (winter, spring, summer, and fall). Throughout the year, Oregon’s cool, clean forest streams provide critical habitat for spawning adults and for young fish as they prepare for their long journey to the sea. 🌲🐟🌲

📣🌲Forest Field Days is our middle school program. This spring, over 1,000 students are signed up to learn about forestry while experiencing a working forest first-hand. Every year, about 120 volunteers make the program possible. Please join us this season. We are currently recruiting for early spring dates. Events take place just outside of Eugene OR. 🌲👏😄🌲What a fantastic day! 512 students learned about forestry during the School Tours at the Oregon Logging Conference yesterday. Thanks to our partners @oregonwomenintimber, Talk About Trees, @oregonloggingconference , and @orforests who work with us to make this program FREE to schools and successful each and every year. Thanks, too, to the teachers and schools who see the importance of forestry education and engage their students with this educational and fun field trip.

👏🌲😄 Tomorrow at the Oregon Logging Conference, over 500 4th and 5th grade students will learn about forestry! Students learn about jobs in the woods, they get to meet foresters, handle tools, identify tree species, and get up close to the big machines. This program is coordinated by Forests Today & Forever in partnership with @oregonloggingconference, @oregonwomenintimber , and Talk About Trees, Oregon. We love this program and expect to have a fantastic day teaching young people about forestry. Stay tuned for pics from this year's event! 🌲😄
